DIY Dry Hair Shampoo Spray for a No-Poo Day

I am one of those people with naturally oily everything! Oily hair, oily skin… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. In fact, I’ve been told by dermatologists that my naturally oily skin is one of the key factors in my “youthful looking skin.” And as a woman, quickly approaching her 47th birthday, I appreciate all the help I can get when it comes to maintaining a youthful appearance.

However, the oily hair can be a pain in the behind sometimes. Combine the natural oils with my habit of running my hands through my hair, a LOT, when I get tired (thanks to my grandma for using this method of putting me to sleep when I was little) and the oily hair look gets even worse.

I also happen to be one of those people who has to shave’ma’legs, every.single.day! It makes showering a horribly, dreadful, chore!

I was tickled PINK when I discovered a recipe for DIY dry hair shampoo that I could just spritz on my hair, rub it through, blow-dry and go! In fact, I could not wait to get cleaned up this morning to give it a try.

As soon as I had my husband out the door and we had finished our daily phone chat on his way to work, I gathered all the ingredients, which I already had on hand, and mixed up my first batch of No-Poo! (I saw where someone else called it that and thought it was kinda cute!)

I pulled my hair up, for the first time since I can remember, because I was not going to wash my hair today! Yay!!! I took my shower, shaved, as usual and then added No-Poo to my normal routine.

I WOULD show you before and after pictures, but like everything else, winter has not been so good to my hair (color that is). I promised myself AND my son’s girlfriend (my new hair stylist) that as soon as temperatures get, and STAY, above 50, I would make an appointment to get my hair completely purdyfied! Once the new color-job is done, I will update this post with those before and after pictures.

By The Way – If you are in New Castle, Indiana or near there and are looking for an awesome hair stylist – you should go see Megan! She does great work – and while my opinion MAY be biased, it is the truth! 🙂  Here SHE is and here’s how you can make an appointment:

Now, where was I?

Oh, yeah… For now, I will just say… I am even MORE tickled PINK with the results of this little beauty tip.

As much as I would LOVE to use it every day, I’ll probably use it a couple of times a week, just to give myself a little break from those lengthier daily rituals.

There are several recipes that can be found with a simple Google search, since there are different recommendations for different hair colors and types – but the one I chose is used by blondes with normal to oily hair.

DIY Dry Shampoo Spray – Ingredients and Supplies

1 Cup Warm Water

¼ Cup Cornstarch

¼ Cup Alcohol or Witch Hazel

Essential Oils (optional)

Empty Spray Bottle (6-8 oz size)

Directions

Mix all ingredients in a small spray bottle and shake well (I mixed all ingredients in a container and then poured the mixture into my bottle for less mess)

If you want to personalize it, add 4-5 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional).

** If you think alcohol may be too harsh, substitute witch hazel.

To Use

Shake well before each use

Spray directly on roots or the oily part of the hair.

Use your fingers to rub and distribute evenly through the oily parts

Let dry

Style as usual

That’s all there is to it! Super easy and saves time too!

  1. That really is genius! Have you tried dried shampoo and if so, would you say that this is better?
