Mega Millions From a Marketing Point of View

No one has won the $425 million Mega Millions jackpot last night.

The numbers drawn were: 19-24-26-27-70, Mega Ball: 12.

The jackpot is expected to reach $550 million for the next drawing on Tuesday, December 17.

It’s been nearly three weeks since I started saying the Mega Millions lottery will be hit on Friday, December 20th or Tuesday the 24th. I’m not saying the lottery can control WHO wins the jackpots, but I do think they can control WHEN someone wins.

From a marketing perspective, it’s a perfect time to grow the jackpot. It’s all about timing. Think about the potential for sales! The lottery would be the gift of choice for office parties and family gatherings. What about all those people who will be buying tickets to giveaway to their mailmen, hairdresser, boss, teacher? Lotto tickets are a great, cheap gift. I can imagine, lots of people will be saving money by forgoing the $20 gift card, and giving the gift of a dream. Nothing sparks dreams, quite like the thought of hitting the lottery.

I would be very surprised if the Mega Millions declares a winner on Tuesday. I’ll still buy my ticket just to be a part of the dream – but if I’m right and it rolls over, I’ll buy up a few more tickets to give as gifts and hope that someone I know wins big.

  1. I must say I can see your point on it. I didn’t buy one last night and woke up to hear nobody one. Maybe I just need to buy one. hehe. Would solve a lot of issues for sure. But as a marketing perspective it is definitely a better way to do it, I’ve been wondering the timing on those too.
